Mechanical Tissues: Botanical Comics

We continue our humorous botanical series on Pharmaceutical Botany with a new botanical comic and a fresh humoresque written in the unique style of Pavlo Glazovyi!

Mechanical Tissues: ‘The Enforcers of the Plant World’

Now, the true ‘enforcers’ of the plant world take the stage – mechanical tissues! They are responsible for strength, elasticity, and resistance to wind and grazing animals.

ABOUT PLANT REINFORCEMENT
A student walks with a gloomy face,
His herbarium’s wilting away.
“How did this burdock keep its pace,
Until it turned red today?

How does the oak stand? Why’s the grass
Springy as rubber in the field?
It’s thin and alive, yet let’s pass
The wind without having to yield!”

Then Professor Phyto, quick as a wink,
Pops out from under a leaf:
“Aha, young man, it’s time to think!
The problem is big, in brief.

So, the grass won’t fall or sway,
When the winds begin to play,
Nature found a clever way –
The mechanical path, I’d say!

It’s like a site: cement is there,
Iron and concrete in the mix.
Here – cell elements with flare,
That keep the ‘fashion’ and fix!
Here’s Collenchyma – a flexible gal,
She’s tough but quite a peach!
Her walls are thick, but she’s a pal –
Drinks water within her reach.

Where the stem is still in bloom,
She stretches like rubber, you see.
It’s not just a simple room,
But elasticity is her destiny!

And Sclerenchyma – a tough Cossack guy!
His wall is a fortress, stone-dead.
Dead and hardened – don’t even try!
But strength? No limits ahead!

Where the oak stands for ages long,
Where the walnut’s hard as flint,
These warriors work, steady and strong,
Giving the proud trunk its tint.

So, study, my student, don’t be a fool,
This botanical reinforcement!
It’s not just dry wood, it’s a rule –
Nature’s architectural endorsement!”

COLLENCHYMA (The Flexible Yoga Guru)

I’m alive, I’m fit and grand,
With an athletic form at hand!
Cellulose stays in my corners thick –
For young stems, I’m the flexible trick.

I spray some water in your eyes:
“Stable turgor!” – my battle cries.
Where the wind bends things like a bow,
I hold them all and steal the show.

I won’t break, I won’t give in,
Dancing with the storm to win!
SCLERENCHYMA (The Dead Special Forces)

We are the Lignin Guard, in battles long refined,
With hollow hearts inside us, but the strongest bones you’ll find!
We died while we were young so the tree could firmly stand,
So, no storm could ever bend us, no sky could scare the land.

Upon our shields is toughness, in our walls – a monolith,
We carry on our shoulders the whole green world and myth.
Don’t ask us to be flexible – we are stone, we are steel,
We are the dead support, with a gaze of iron zeal!

SCLEREID (The Tooth Crusher)

I am a Sclereid, a wall made of stone,
A fortress of strength in my thresholds alone!
With armor of lignin and hammer in hand,
I’m the terror of nuts across all of the land.

“Try to bite me!” – I throw down the glove,
To those with cracked teeth, there’s no mercy or love.
Through narrow pore canals, I barely can breathe,
My heart is like iron, cold in its sheath.

I’m a dead cell, a shield for the fruit and the seed,
No drought and no flood shall I ever heed.
The shell is my home, my cozy stone crypt,
I’m the HARDCORE by which your wild steppe is equipped!
🎭 The Humoresque’s Moral:
So, bear this in mind, dear students, and see:
Two Mechanical tissues are the key to the tree!
Collenchyma – gives flexibility and a living soul,
Sclerenchyma – provides hardness and a steadfast role!
Botany is power, not just plants in a line,
Here everyone serves like a complex machine by design!
