The Department of Pharmaceutical and Biological Chemistry, Pharmacognosy of Kyiv Medical University was established in September 2003 (at that time it was called the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Pharmacognosy), and during this time it has become one of the leading departments of the university, gaining wide recognition not only in Ukraine but also beyond its borders.

During the existence of the department, its staff has published 768 scientific and methodological works, and received 15 Patents of Ukraine.

   From 2014 to 2019, 95 articles and 98 abstracts of reports were published, and 8 Patents of Ukraine were obtained. More about the achievements of the department…

Today (2026), the department has 3 professors and 6 associate professors. In 2014, 3 candidate dissertations were defended, and in 2020, the senior lecturer of the department, Hurtovenko Irina Alexandrovna, successfully defended her dissertation for the degree of Candidate of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

 Outstanding achievement of the department in 2025

In 2025, the scientific work on the topic: “Comprehensive pharmacognostic study of different types of raw materials of red oak Quercus rubra L. as sources of biologically active substances for the creation of medicines with specified properties” by a 2nd year postgraduate student – senior lecturer at the Department of Pharmaceutical and Biological Chemistry, Pharmacognosy Omelkovets T.S. received the Prize of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine for Young Scientists for 2025 (Resolution of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine dated 04.12.2025 No. 4713-IX https://zakon.rada.gov.ua/laws/show/4713-20#Text).

Every year, students who carry out scientific work at the department receive Certificates and Diplomas at various conferences and in various nominations.

2021 year: In 2021, the scientific work of a member of the student scientific circle of the department – a 5th-year student of the Faculty of Pharmacy Mysholov A.A. “Phytopolymer coating with specified therapeutic properties” – was awarded the Prize of the NAMS of Ukraine and the Association of Medical University Employees of Ukraine for students for the 2021 academic year.

In 2021, a member of the student scientific circle of the department, a 3rd-year student of the Faculty of Pharmacy Fomina K.O. received a Diploma of the 2nd degree at the 2nd stage of the All-Ukrainian competition of student scientific works in the specialty “Pharmacology, Pharmacy (in English)”, which was held at the National Medical University named after O.O. Bogomolets (April 14, 2021, Kyiv) with a report on the topic: “Phytochemical study on Agastache foeniculum and Agastache urticifolia“.

     Thus, in 2019, 3rd-year student Alonge Halimat Shadiat took Second place with a Second Degree Diploma at the II stage of the All-Ukrainian competition of student scientific works (in English) in the specialty “Pharmacology, Pharmacy,” held on April 4, 2019, at the National Medical University named after A.A. Bogomolets.

      In 2018, 4th-year student Yashchuk Bohdana won First place with a First Degree Diploma for her victory at the XXII International Medical Congress of Young Scientists and Students, held on April 23-25, 2018, in Ternopil at the Ternopil State Medical University named after I.Ya. Horbachevsky.

     In 2017, our students received First Degree Diploma and Certificate “For Original Scientific Research” at the International Medical Congresses of Young Scientists and Students.
     4th-year student Atyaksheva Nadezhda won First place with a First Degree Diploma for her victory at the XXI International Medical Congress of Young Scientists and Students, held on April 24-26, 2017, in Ternopil at the Ternopil State Medical University named after I.Ya. Horbachevsky, while 3rd-year student Mikhaylovskaya Alena received a Certificate “For Original Scientific Research” at the IV International Medical and Pharmaceutical Congress of Students and Young Scientists “Innovations and Prospects of Modern Medicine” (Bukovinian International Medical Congress, BIMCO 2017), held on April 5-7, 2017, in Chernivtsi at the Bukovinian State Medical University.

In 2016, our students – members of the scientific circle of the department – received 3 Diplomas.

    These are Romanyuk Antonina (Diploma “For Best Presentation”) and Atyaksheva Nadezhda (Diploma “For Active Participation in Scientific Discussion”) – at the III International Medical and Pharmaceutical Congress of Students and Young Scientists “Priorities and Prospects of Youth Science” (Bukovinian International Medical Congress, BIMCO 2016), held on April 6-8, 2016, in Chernivtsi at the Bukovinian State Medical University; Movchanyuk Irina (Diploma for 2nd place) – at the XX International Medical Congress of Students and Young Scientists in Ternopil, held at the Ternopil State Medical University on April 25-27, 2016.Every year, 10-12 diploma works are defended by graduates of the University at the department.
