Riddles of Plants

Plant Mysteries

In this series of original articles, we will explore the controversial issues related to medicinal plants and their active substances.

     Do we often think about the possible consequences of using certain medicinal plants, for example:

  • the well-known immune system stimulant – purple echinacea;
  • a spasmolytic – peppermint;
  • a tasty fruit “for weight loss” – grapefruit;
  • “plant-based” meat – soy, as well as beans, peas, legumes;
  • the beloved “culinary anabolic” – garlic?

Or do we swallow tablets, dragees, capsules by the handful, believing the packaging that says “Antioxidants” and firmly believing that now we are protected from all diseases and will remain forever young?

Or perhaps it’s worth pausing and reflecting?

  •      Let’s start with echinacea;
  •      continue with peppermint;
  •      let’s not forget grapefruit, about which so much contradictory has been said;
  •      we will deliver a verdict on garlic, actively recommended by bodybuilders for muscle mass gain;
  •      we will search for the grain of truth among the vast amount of information about antioxidants,
  •    including clarifying the truly unique antioxidant – a component of the body’s own antioxidant system – coenzyme Q10 – a real panacea against aging – and reveal its actual dietary sources…
  •     we will discuss the biological role of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in a healthy and “not so healthy” body and focus on some possible adverse effects of the advertised omega-3;
  •     we will tell the truth about the favorite drink of our grandmothers – “yesterday’s” and “the day before yesterday’s” tea – tea “with a film”.
