Sodium for Plants: Winter Hardiness

         Sodium (Na)

         For the plant – winter hardiness.

        In plant organisms sodium regulates the transport of carbohydrates. It is important for the transport of substances across membranes and is part of the so-called sodium–potassium pump (Na+/K+).

      Providing plants with sodium increases their winter hardiness.

      In case of sodium deficiency, chlorophyll formation is slowed down.

The sodium content in plant organisms averages 0.02% (by weight).

     Medicinal plants containing sodium:
• common dandelion Taraxacum officinale Webb, Asteraceae (roots);
• wild chicory Cichorium intybus L., Asteraceae (roots);
• sugar kelp Laminaria saccharina (L.) J.V.Lamour., Laminariaceae (thalli)
• peppermint Mentha piperita L., Lamiaceae (leaves);
• black currant Ribes nigrum L., Grossulariaceae (leaves);
• fragrant dill Anethum graveolens L., Apiaceae (herb, fruits);
curly parsley Petroselinum crispum (Mill.) Nyman ex A.W.Hill, Apiaceae (whole plant);
• four-petaled cranberry Oxycoccus quadripetalus Gilib., Ericaceae (fruits).
