Radix Panasovych: “Don’t get distracted by the colors, Radyk! This is the vascular hierarchy. The Xylem Express is our high-pressure ‘Up’ line, delivering water and minerals. Meanwhile, the Phloem Local is the ‘Down’ line, distributing the organic products of photosynthesis. If the logistics fail for even a second, the whole ‘station’ will wither!”!
Cambium is the Turbo button! Press it – and the vascular bundle becomes open. We’re growing wider, gentlemen! In dicotyledonous plants, there is always an active construction zone between the phloem (P) and the xylem (X). The cambium constantly adds new ‘floors’ of conducting tissues.
Remember: ‘open’ means open for growth thanks to the cambium.
Radyk: “Grandfather, I found a hidden switch between the X and the P! Should I press it?”
Radix Panasovych: “Careful, Radyk! That’s the Cambium. One click, and you’ve activated the Open Bundle mode! It’s like a construction crane that never sleeps. While monocots are stuck with what they have, our dicot friends are building a skyscraper! This is why a sunflower can grow a thick stem, but a blade of grass cannot.”
Caution, armor ahead! Our Mechanic is constructing a sclerenchyma layer. Now, the vascular bundle can withstand even the toughest exam! In monocotyledonous plants, the cambium is absent. 🌽 The bundle is formed once and for all, surrounded by a dense protective ring of sclerenchyma, acting as armor. Cambium is strictly prohibited here, which is why the bundle is called ‘closed’ – it is incapable of secondary thickening.
Radyk: “Wow, Mr. Mechanic! Why are you building such a thick wall around these pipes? Is someone planning a heist?”
The Mechanic: “Better than a heist, kid – it’s an exam! In these monocot carriages, we don’t have that fancy ‘Turbo’ cambium button. So, I’m installing a sclerenchyma sheath.
