           The author of this site is Konovalova Olena Yuriyivna.

  Many of my colleagues remember and know me by my maiden name – Makovetska (Makovets`ka, Makovetskaya).

Today I am a Doctor of Pharmaceutical Sciences (2002), Professor (2011), Head of the Department of Pharmaceutical and Biological Chemistry, Pharmacognosy at Kyiv Medical University.

    I was born on 19.09.1966 in Kharkiv, and have lived in Kyiv since I was 7 years old. I graduated with a Gold Medal from Secondary School No. 33 in Kyiv (1983), and with a Red Diploma from the Biological Faculty of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv (1988) with a specialty in “Physiology and Biochemistry of Plants”.

I defended my candidate’s dissertation at the age of 25 (Candidate of Biological Sciences, dissertation topic: “Biological Features and Comparative Evaluation of Bioactive Compounds of the Genus Hypericum L. in Ukraine”, 1992);

I defended my doctoral dissertation at the age of 35 (Doctor of Pharmaceutical Sciences, dissertation topic: “Bioactive Compounds of the Genus Hypericum L. as a Source for the Creation of Medicinal Products with Specified Properties”, 2002).

Senior Research Fellow (1999).

Professor (2011).

Laureate of the NAS of Ukraine Prize for Young Scientists (2000).

Information from the website of Kyiv Medical University

As a fourth-year student, I began working in the Biochemistry Department of the M.G. Kholodny Institute of Botany of the NAS of Ukraine (1987–1988), and after graduating from the University, I immediately entered graduate school in the Department of Medical Botany at the Central Botanical Garden of the NAS of Ukraine (now the M.M. Gryshko National Botanical Garden of the NAS of Ukraine) (1988). I worked in this department until September 2003, serving as a junior researcher, researcher, senior researcher, and leading researcher.

However, since I have always enjoyed sharing my knowledge and new information with others (especially with those who are interested and have a lively mind), inspiring them with various scientific novelties, my path inevitably led to teaching.

Since 1999, while working at the Botanical Garden, I also began teaching pharmacognosy at the Department of Pharmacy of the National Medical University named after O.O. Bohomolets (at that time it was one general department of pharmacy with sections; since 2002, the pharmacognosy section has been transformed into an independent department of pharmacognosy and botany).

Since 1.09.2003, from the day of the establishment of the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Pharmacognosy of the Medical Institute of the Ukrainian Association of Folk Medicine (now Kyiv Medical University), I have been its head.

Author of more than 370 published scientific and methodological works, including 16 textbooks, 3 monographs, and 13 Patents of Ukraine for inventions.

Member of the Specialized Academic Council for the defense of candidate and doctoral dissertations at the National Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education named after P.L. Shupyk (2004-2012). Every year (often several times a year) – opponent of candidate (or PhD) and doctoral dissertations.

     Main Directions of Scientific Research – studying the morphobiological diversity of medicinal plants; searching for species promising in terms of bioactive compound (BAC) content for the creation of medicinal products with specified properties; researching the fine molecular structure of BAC; computer modeling and synthesis of new compounds based on known BAC; developing technology for obtaining and quality indicators of new medicinal phytopreparations.

I graduated from music school No. 3 named after V.S. Kosenko (1980) and can distinguish the note “C” from the note “F”, as the actor Leonid Bykov said in the film “Only Old Men Go to Battle”.

In childhood and youth, I wrote music, poetry, songs, and now – textbooks, monographs, methodological guides, and scientific articles… In my student years, I sang songs with a guitar on stage during University celebrations and around the campfire during summer practice, and now I give lectures to students… In school, I was the class komsorg, and now I head the department…

Here it is – the dialectics of personal development…
