Flaxseed Oil

FLAXSEED OIL (LINSEED OIL)

Flaxseed oil is obtained from pre-cleaned and crushed flax seeds (Linum usitatissimum). The oil yield from the seeds using the cold-pressing method is 30-35%.

Flaxseed oil is a valuable source of alpha-linolenic acid (18:3), a fatty acid belonging to the group of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). Its content accounts for 53% of the total oil mass and 5335% of the recommended daily intake of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids for the human body.
Thus, 1.9 g of flaxseed oil (less than half a teaspoon) completely satisfies the daily requirement of the human body for omega-3 fatty acids!
Flaxseed oil contains almost no mineral elements or vitamins, except for tocopherols and vitamin K. It is characterized by a high content of tocopherols (vitamin E), particularly gamma-tocopherol (269.3% of the daily value per 100 g).
As with other vegetable oils, one of the determining nutrients of flaxseed oil, forming the basis of its value as a food ingredient, are the fatty acids. Thus, the fatty acid composition is dominated by unsaturated fatty acids (210.0% of the daily value per 100 g), in particular, omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (5335.2% of the daily value, respectively—namely, alpha-linolenic acid (18:3)—up to 53.4 g per 100 g). The content of the monounsaturated fatty acid—oleic acid (18:1)—is also relatively high (up to 20.2 g per 100 g), as is the omega-6 di-unsaturated fatty acid—linoleic acid (18:2): up to 14.3 g per 100 g (representing 135% of the daily value). Other fatty acids, both unsaturated and saturated, are present in flaxseed oil in smaller quantities.
Flaxseed oil is a significant source of phytosterols (1252.7% of the daily value per 100 g), among which beta-sitosterol substantially predominates (515.0% of the daily value, respectively). This allows flaxseed oil to be classified as a women’s product (for further details, see Avocado). The content of campesterol (184.5%), delta-5-avenasterol (107.3%), and stigmasterol (92.9%) is also quite high. Overall, the phytosterol composition of flaxseed oil is exceptionally diverse, comprising 11 different substances that harmoniously complement the action of beta-sitosterol.
Flaxseed oil does not contain carbohydrates, purine bases, or oxalic acid.
Flaxseed oil contains lignanssecoisolariciresinol diglucoside and its derivatives—which reduce total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL, “bad cholesterol”) levels in the blood serum while increasing high-density lipoprotein (HDL, “good cholesterol”) levels, thereby exerting a positive effect in cases of atherosclerosis. Flaxseed oil lignans also exhibit antioxidant, antimitotic (antitumor), and estrogen-like activity.
