Mango

MANGO
The fruits of the mango (Mangifera indica) possess a high concentration of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) (45.8% of the Daily Value [DV] per 100 g), folate (folic acid) (21.5%), and beta-carotene (18.3%).
The primary constituents of the mineral profile are: silicon (105.0% DV per 100 g), boron (30.6%), rubidium (23.2%), and copper (11.0%).
Mango fruits are characterized by a significant concentration of total phytosterols (44.4% DV per 100 g), within which beta-sitosterol serves as the predominant sterol (48.5% DV).
The nutritional matrix includes a substantial mono- and disaccharide fraction (27.3% DV per 100 g), specifically glucose (20.1%), fructose (13.4%), and sucrose (6.97 g per 100 g). Among the polysaccharides, pectic substances predominate (40.0% DV per 100 g). The ripe fruit contains minor quantities of starch (0.2 g per 100 g). It should be noted that immature (unripe) mangoes exhibit a significantly higher starch concentration—up to 7.0%—which, during the maturation process, undergoes enzymatic hydrolysis into water-soluble saccharides, primarily glucose and amylose.
The total purine base content per 100 g constitutes 6.7% of the daily allowance.
Mango fruits are devoid of oxalic acid.
The therapeutic profile of the mango is fundamentally defined by its secondary metabolites, which determine its primary pharmacological effects. Notable among these are the xanthones (specifically mangiferin), which exhibit potent antidepressant and antiviral properties (with targeted efficacy against the Herpes simplex virus).
Due to the presence of these xanthones, mango consumption is clinically indicated as a supportive measure for viral infections (particularly herpetic) and depressive disorders.
